Goal Keeper Profiles

Carlo Cudicini CARLO CUDICINI- No.23

This 28 year old keeper was very highly rated in Italy with many predicting a bright future in Serie A.

Chelsea snapped him up for £160,000 as backup for Ed De Goey in 1999 but on Ranieri's arrival the Italian overtook the Dutchman in becoming 1st choice in the bulk of the 2000/2001 season.

An injury in pre-season prevented him from carrying on that role but following an injury to Mark Bosnich he once again gained his chance and took it with both hands, gaining clean sheet after clean sheet.

Very agile and athletic he's a strong shot stopper and seems to grow in confidence with every game and looks set to have a 3 way tussle to be the first choice keeper this season.

Born 06/09/73 Milan, Italy
Signed July 1999, For £160,000
Previous clubs Castel Di Sangro
Height 6'1

I think Cudicini is very good player and he never ceases to amaze with his goal keeping skills.
He is for ever Blue.

ED DE GOEY- No. 1

The tallest man ever to play for Chelsea, standing at 6'6, not many people can lob him! After Dmitri Kharine's injury 4 seasons ago Chelsea struggled all season in goal, the signing of the big Dutch international was designed to fill that weak area.

At first people weren't sure, but it wasn't long before he was winning the fans over and went onto set a record of 29 clean sheets in a season.

De Goey has played several times in the Dutch national side and was Holland's number one choice for a long time, and is a widely respected keeper with a lot of European experience. Has become a key figure in Chelsea's push for honours, underrated by many, but an excellent keeper.

With the arrivals of Cudicini and Bosnich he now has a fight on his hand for the first choice slot and injuries haven't helped.

Born Gouda, Holland, 20/12/66

MARK BOSNICH- No. 31

Mark Bosnich Mark Bosnich was snapped up on a free transfer after being released by Man Utd after a move that just never worked out for him.

The Australian international was widely regarded as one of the Premiership's best keepers when at Aston Villa and was chosen to be Peter Schemical's replacement at United. But a series of seemingly never ending injuries meant his career never got going there.

United in the meantime went out and bought Bartez which ultimately result in Bosnich leaving. Chelsea signed him on a free and after more injury frustration last year it meant he had to wait until 1st November for his Chelsea debut. Yet when he made it his performances in the next few games gained rave reviews before yet again the injury jinx struck again keeping him out until the new year. When fit Bosnich will be looking to stablish himself as first choice.
